How long do dermal fillers last?

The longevity of dermal fillers depends on the type of filler, where it’s placed (low movement area vs. high movement area) and individual factors like metabolism and lifestyle.
Most dermal fillers are made from hyaluronic acid, which is injected under the skin to recreate lost fullness by replacing naturally occurring hyaluronic acid. Dermal fillers use cross-linked hyaluronic acid in different complexities (low, moderate and high). This process chemically bonds individual hyaluronic acid chains together to form a three-dimensional network, creating a gel that’s more stable and longer lasting.
The thickness (viscosity) of a dermal filler plays a major role not only in its placement but how it is handled and how long it will last.
Thin / low viscosity / low cross-linked fillers: duration 3-9 months
Ideal for:
Fine perioral lines (“smoker’s lines”)
Superficial wrinkles
Factors influencing duration:
Skin thickness: thinner skin may metabolize filler faster
Movement: areas with frequent motion (like around the mouth or eyes) can reduce longevity.
Depth of injection: superficial lines need very thin, soft fillers, which tend to break down faster than thicker fillers used in deeper folds.
Medium / moderate-viscosity/ moderate cross-linked:
Duration dependant on area
Lips: 6–9 months (high movement) nasolabial folds / marionette lines: 9–12 months
Thick / high-viscosity/ high cross-linked fillers: duration 12-24months
Ideal for:
Cheekbones and jawline contouring
Chin augmentation
Individual and lifestyle factors affecting dermal filler duration:
The body breaks down dermal filler faster due to:
High metabolism or frequent exercise
Smoking
Sun exposure (including sunbeds)
Poor hydration
High facial mobility (smiling, talking a lot, etc.)
